Improv for The Classroom

Improv is a tool you probably haven’t thought of using in the classroom, but you should. Improv and teaching have more in common than you might think. Teachers improvise frequently, and no, this doesn’t mean they don’t prepare. It means that despite thorough preparation, nothing ever goes exactly as planned. Any teacher can tell you that one of the most difficult, yet enjoyable, parts of their job is that it is never the same. Children are unpredictable, and no two lessons are ever the same.

“Gary gave our staff an energetic, fun, and meaningful in-service training. Engaging and approachable, Gary led staff who were eager to learn more about improvisation but also captured the attention of those brand new to performance.  Every teacher regardless of grade level or subject taught was inspired to put more PLAY in their classroom and excitedly brainstormed possibilities. As a performer and teaching artist myself, I was most refreshed by the now endless possibilities of some favorite standards, as well as new tools to utilize! Whether on zoom or in-person, Gary created a dynamic and safe space for participation, imagination, and expression. Seeing how much fun Gary had with educators is just a glimpse into what it must be like to be one of his students. We are looking into ways to bring Gary into work with more of our staff, students, and community and highly recommend his leadership for your school, theater, and even corporate community”.
